Founders ask which launch channel is best. The better question is where this product becomes interesting without a long explanation.

A developer tool, a consumer habit app, and software for dental practices should not walk into the same room and expect the same welcome.

Choose the room where the problem is already understood.

Begin with the people you need

Write down the first useful outcome of the launch. It may be ten technical testers, three paid design partners, twenty interviews, backlinks from practitioners, or broad awareness among early adopters.

Then name the people capable of producing that outcome. “Traffic” cannot test a workflow. “Operations leads at small logistics firms” can.

The channel follows the user and the learning goal. It should not follow a founder’s fear of missing a leaderboard.

Hacker News rewards technical candor

HN fits products that builders can inspect, try, or discuss in technical detail. The story matters when it explains a real problem, a non-obvious mechanism, and honest trade-offs.

Bring a working product or a direct demo. State the price and limitations. Stay for the hard questions. The guide to launching on Hacker News covers the format in detail.

Do not bend a lifestyle product or local service into a developer story merely because the audience is large.

Product Hunt rewards a prepared public package

Product Hunt gathers early adopters who expect a clear product page, visuals, maker participation, and something they can try. Its own launch guide recommends setting goals tied to the company rather than treating leaderboard position as the only result.

Use it when the product can be understood quickly and benefits from a concentrated day of public feedback. Prepare the page, first comment, pricing status, media, team access, and support coverage. Do not ask people directly for upvotes; ask them to visit and join the discussion. The Product Hunt launch guide covers current platform rules, the draft and scheduling process, launch assets, promotion boundaries, and what to measure below upvotes.

Focused communities reward prior membership

A subreddit, Slack group, Discord server, professional forum, or local association can produce better users than a large launch site. It can also reject a founder who arrives only to extract attention.

Read the rules. Participate before launch. Share the work in the format the community accepts: a case study, technical explanation, free tool, honest request for critique, or direct offer. Disclose your relationship to the product.

If the post would be useless without the link, it is probably an ad.

Direct outreach rewards specificity

For narrow B2B products, the right launch may be twenty personal messages. Name the observed problem, why the person is relevant, and the small action you are asking for.

Stripe Atlas’s guide to finding the first ten customers makes the case for researching prospects individually and providing value before asking for much. This route is slower to display and faster to teach.

Pick one primary channel

Prepare one launch for one audience. Use other channels to support it only where you already belong. Copying the same announcement across ten communities produces weak context and shallow replies.

Tag each source and measure completed jobs, returns, useful conversations, and sales. If the launch brings attention but no action, use the traffic-without-signups diagnostic.

The best channel is not the one with the largest crowd. It is the one that puts the product in front of people whose behavior can teach you what to build next.
